Dedham Day Moved to November. Here's How the Rest of the Season Lines Up

Why is a festival known for rides, barbecue and a cow on a field happening on the first Saturday of November? The Town of Dedham asked the question first. Its postponement notice has a section headed "Why November 7?" and answers it with "Great question!"

The answer explains more than one date. It also changes the order of Dedham's fall. The 36th annual Dedham Day & Cow Plop was supposed to be the town's last big outdoor afternoon of September. Now it's the first of four community events in four weeks. All four happen within a few blocks of each other on Eastern Avenue and High Street, and the last one ends with Santa and the Town Christmas tree.

The cow set the date

Dedham Day was scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 27. On Wednesday, Sept. 23, the town postponed it because a coastal storm was forecast to hit New England that weekend, as the Needham-Dedham Times reported.

Rescheduling an outdoor festival is mostly a booking problem. In its postponement notice, the town said it "looked carefully at all of our options for an earlier rescheduled date and discussed availability with our vendors." It chose Nov. 7 to avoid clashing with other community events and to make sure it still had "the rides, attractions, and entertainment (especially the cow) that Dedham Day is known for."

So the date depended on the ride operators, the vendors, the existing community calendar and one animal. The town still kept the run going. The same notice says, "we will still be hosting Dedham Day for the 36th year!" The 35th edition was held Sept. 28, 2025, at the same Barnes Memorial location, according to the Needham-Dedham Times.

What Saturday, Nov. 7 actually looks like

The rescheduled festival keeps the same place and program, with a noon start.

  • Where: Barnes Memorial Park, 140 Eastern Ave.
  • When: Noon to 4 p.m., per the town's Dedham Day page.
  • Sensory-Friendly Hour: 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The rides start at noon, so families who want a quieter first half hour get one.
  • Rain date: Sunday, Nov. 8.
  • Program: BBQ, rides and games, local vendors, music, face painting and crafts, community demonstrations and the Cow Plop.

Dedham Parks & Recreation runs the day with the Friends of Dedham Recreation. The Dedham Museum & Archive says it will have a table with interactive educational materials and gift shop items. The Museum's page lists a longer window, 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., but the town's published festival hours are noon to 4 p.m. Plan around the town's hours.

If you bought a Cow Plop deed for September, you know the idea. You buy a square of the field and wait to see where the cow, in the town's words, "decides to 'make its mark.'" The Needham-Dedham Times reported deeds selling for $10 each before the original date. The Dedham Drop's Oct. 22 issue still lists Nov. 7 and links to an online sale for 2026 Cow Plop deeds, so there's still time to get a square.

Four events in four weeks, all along Eastern Avenue and High Street

Moving Dedham Day to November put it right next to events that were already on the calendar. The September festival used to stand on its own. In 2026 it's the first stop in a run that ends with the tree lighting.

Date Event Where Hours
Sat., Nov. 7 Dedham Day & Cow Plop Barnes Memorial Park, 140 Eastern Ave. Noon to 4 p.m.
Sat., Nov. 14 Dedham Farmers Market Holiday Shopping Market First Parish and Church, 670 High St. 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Sat., Nov. 28 Small Business Saturday Dedham Square businesses 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Fri., Dec. 4 Dedham Square Holiday Stroll & tree lighting Dedham Square, High St. and Eastern Ave. 5 to 8 p.m.

The location is what ties these together. The festival is on Eastern Avenue. The indoor market is at the church on High Street. Small Business Saturday sends shoppers to the storefronts in the Square, and the Holiday Stroll closes parts of both streets for an evening. If you live near the Square, you can walk to all four.

Nov. 14: the farmers market moves indoors

One week after the Cow Plop, the Dedham Farmers Market starts its winter season indoors at First Parish and Church, 670 High St. The market's winter listing names Nov. 14 and Dec. 12 as Holiday Shopping Markets, both on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

After December, the indoor market keeps meeting once a month with a theme:

  1. Jan. 23: Comfort/Valentines Gift Market
  2. Feb. 20: Meet the Market Artisan Market, with maker demos
  3. March 20: Easter/EID/Holiday Gift Market and a Start Your Garden theme

Starting April 3, it switches to every other Saturday through June 12, 2027. The market has run since 2007. It stays indoors unless the weather is sunny, dry and in the mid-60s, has a dedicated customer parking lot, and features live music and demonstrations. So the November market is the start of a season that runs into June, and for many people it will be the first holiday shopping stop of the year.

Nov. 28: Small Business Saturday in the Square

Two days after Thanksgiving, Dedham Square Circle is promoting Small Business Saturday on Nov. 28, both in person and online. The organization makes a specific claim about money staying local: "$68 for every $100 stays in the community when spent at a local business." It counts holiday shopping, dining and service businesses toward the effort, so a haircut or a dinner out counts the same as a gift.

The Friends of the Dedham Town Green are also looking for a new logo before then. Per the Dedham Drop, the winner gets $250 in gift cards to the Dedham Square business of their choice, recognition in the Dedham Times, and a framed copy of the logo. Entries are due Friday, Nov. 6, at 11:59 p.m. Anyone can enter, with up to three designs. Hand-drawn work is welcome, AI-made designs are not allowed, and every design has to include "Friends of Dedham Town Green." Email entries to [email protected] with the subject "Logo Submission." Because the prize is gift cards to Square businesses, it brings the contest back to the same storefronts Small Business Saturday promotes.

Dec. 4: the Holiday Stroll ends the run

The last event is on a Friday night. Dedham Square Circle's 2026 Holiday Stroll listing sets the "revamped" Dedham Square Holiday Stroll & Gift Market for Friday, Dec. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m. Merchants will stay open late with discounts and treats. The listing includes:

  • A gift market with 30-plus street vendors
  • Street food vendors and Dedham Square restaurants
  • The Dedham School of Music and Dedham Community Band performing together
  • First Church & Parish Dedham Carolers singing around the Square
  • A free Holiday Train display from the Dedham Museum & Archive, with O Scale Lionel and MTH locomotives
  • The official lighting of the Town's Christmas tree with Santa at 6:30 p.m., followed by photos with Santa at Orchid 7 Bar & Grill

The Dedham Museum & Archive brings its table to Dedham Day on Nov. 7 and its train display to the Stroll on Dec. 4. First Parish hosts the indoor market on Nov. 14, and the First Church & Parish carolers sing at the Stroll. Many of the same local groups show up at several of these events.

Getting there on Dec. 4

Streets close at 4:30 p.m. The closures are High Street from Washington Street to the Harris Street intersection, and Eastern Avenue from High Street to CVS. The town parking lot stays open all evening. Overflow parking is in three places:

  • The Town Hall lot on Washington Street
  • The Dedham Square Crossing lot at High Street and East Street, also called the Gonzalez field lot
  • Behind the Registry of Deeds at Ames Street and High Street

Portable restrooms will be in the Keystone Lot. Dedham Square Circle's general Holiday Stroll page shows some different details, including a larger vendor count and a different Santa photo spot. The dated Dec. 4, 2026 listing is the most specific version, and it's the one to check again that week.

How this fall's calendar differs from last year's

In 2025, Dedham Day was held in late September, about two months before the holiday events on High Street. This year it opens the season. In order, the calendar now has the Cow Plop on Nov. 7, the first indoor market a week later, Small Business Saturday after Thanksgiving, and the tree lighting six days after that. Our late-summer look at Dedham covered the Square and Legacy Place in competition for weeknight crowds. This November, the town and Dedham Square Circle have filled four of the season's busiest dates in the Square, starting with a festival that had to wait for its cow.

If the weather holds, the cow comes back to Barnes Memorial Park on Saturday, Nov. 7, between noon and 4 p.m. If it doesn't, check back for Sunday, Nov. 8.
